F.A.Q.
"If you are
using BDE on Windows Vista, you need to reconfigure
BDE so that it does not attempt to write files to
the C:\<root> directory. To do this, log on as
an administrator and run BDEAdmin.exe, located at
Program Files\Common Files\Borland Shared\BDE. Under
Native, click PARADOX, and change NET DIR to point
to a location other than the root directory. A
suggested target is C:\Users\Public."
Q : How and where do I set up the
problem and how do I record fairy pieces and
conditions ?
A :
1 - you must always work in an opened table, but not in
the table "Echecs". So if you have not yet created
another one, do the following :
a) in the menu "Fichier"|"File", click on
"Ouvrir/Créer"|"Open/Create".
b) give a name to the table and click on OK : the
new table is automatically opened.
2 - To add a new problem, click on the "+" in the
navigation bar, or use the shortcut "Ctrl + N" : you are
automatically in the page "Echiquier" and the database
is in "Edit" mode, with an empty board.
3 - To put the pieces on the board, "drag and drop" with
the mouse.
4 - When it is done, click on the 2nd button in the
navigation bar (with the hint "Poster les
modifications"|"Post the modifications") or use the
shortcut "F11".
5 - click on the page "Infos".
6 - click on the zone just beside "Pieces...:".
7 - enter the name (or at least the first letters of the
name) of the piece corresponding to the figurine in the
next zone (of course if there are fairy pieces on the
board) and press the "enter" key when the wanted name is
selected.
8 - use the "left" key to pass to the next fairy piece
...etc.
9 - to insert a condition, select the zone beside
"Conditions" and enter the name (or at least the first
letters of the name) of the condition and press the
"enter" key when the wanted name is selected.
Q : How do I record stipulations and
aims ?
A : Select the stipulation in the zone beside
"Enoncé"|"Stipulation" (you can enter the name or use
the "up" and "down" key), the aim in the next zone
(idem, use the "up" and "down" key and enter the number
of moves in the next zone. For instance, for h=3, select
"Aidé" in the stipulation zone, "=" in the aim zone
("But") and enter 3 in the number of moves zone ("Nombre
de coups").
Q : How to interrupt a solving
process ?
A : Press the "Escape" key.
Q : How to delete a condition ?
A : Select the condition to delete and press "Del".
Q : How to print a solved problem
with solution ?
A : Menu "Edition", "Copier L'ensemble (RTF)" : you can
then paste in any RTF editor (such as "Word").
Q : When there is a frame around a
piece, both "empty frame" and "piece+frame" appear in
the list of figurines. Is it normal ?
A : Yes. In most of the cases, only the empty frame has
to be defined : all "pieces+frame" must then be deleted
(press "Del" when they are selected). But in some case
(for Chameleons for instance) it is "pieces+frame" which
must be defined and the empty frame which must be
deleted.
Note that while the text "n pièce(s) non définies" is
blinking, there are still pieces to define or to delete.
Q : Trying to solve a problem, I have
the message "Une pièce féerique n'est pas définie".
A : this message may occur for two reasons :
1) WinChloe is not able to test problems having one of
the pieces : such pieces are written in blue instead of
red in the pieces zone. this is normal!
2) A text of the style "n pièce(s) non définies" is
blinking under the first "pieces" zone, indicating the
number of pieces in the list of pieces for which a name
has not been given.
Q : How to insert "Strict Circe" in
the condition field ?
A : "Circé" + "Renaissances Circé strict".
This to avoid the multiplication of Circé conditions. It
is the same for "Renaissances Circé Rex Inclusiv",
"Renaissances Circé assassin", "Renaissances Circé
volcanique" and "Renaissances Circé parachuté". In this
way, "Circé diagramme volcanique Rex Inclusiv" is "Circé
diagramme" + "Renaissances Circé volcanique"
+ "Renaissances Circé Rex Inclusiv".
Q : How to insert "Anticircé type
Calvet" or "Anticircé type Cheylan" in the
condition field ?
A : In WinChloe, "Anticircé" is type Cheylan by
default, i.e. captures on rebirth square are not
allowed. If they are allowed (type Calvet), the
condition "Captures sur case de renaissance
autorisées" must be added.
To summarize :
Anticircé type Cheylan = "Anticircé"
Anticircé type Calvet = "Anticircé"
+ "Captures sur case de renaissance autorisées"
Q : If one makes a mistake in putting
a piece in the board, what is the easy way to
eliminate a wrongly placed piece without having to
start again ?
A : The simplest way is to double-click the piece (in
the page "Echiquier").
There is another possibility, only interesting with
great boards : click with the right button anywhere on
the board, then click on "Supprimer une pièce" (last
item of the popup menu), and indicate the square of the
piece to remove.
Q : How to select length records
problems ?
A : For length records in a specific genre, create a
filter/query to search only these kind of problem, then
click on Statistics in the menu 'Problems', and click on
'Number of moves'.
For instance, if you look for orthodox series-selfmates,
create the filter:
and the query:
Then click on 'Statistics' in the menu
'Problems', or on the corresponding button in the
buttons bar , and click on the
tab 'Number of moves'.
then on the header 'Number of moves', to
sort according to this number of moves.
The record seems to be in 191 moves. As
there are few problems with more than 100 moves, you
can, for instance, complete the filter to consider only
problems with more than 100 moves. Close the statistics
page, reopen the filter page and add a line:
Browsing the problems, you see that 191
is the record with promoted pieces and 131 without
promoted pieces.
Q : How to select problems with at
least 4 black promotions on the same square ?
A : Create the query:
In WinChloe, direct promotions are always
preceded by "=". Note that for
the squares, you must use 'ç' and 'é' instead of 'c'
and 'e'.
Q : How to select problems with AUW
and at least 1 extra-promotion ?
A : Create the query (click on the corresponding square
to add a parenthesis):
